Pittsburgh Penguins Sign Goalie Filip Larsson, Re-Sign Forward Sam Poulin
John E. Sokolowski-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Penguins announced today the signing of former Detroit Red Wings goalie prospect Filip Larsson, per GM Kyle Dubas. Larsson has joined the team under a two-year contract with an AAV of $775K.

Larsson spent the 2023-24 season with Lesksands IF in the SHL, putting up a 19-9-0 record with a 1.93 goals-against average and a .920 save percentage in 28 games, along with 3-2-0 record and a 1.91 goals-against average and a .929 save percentage in five SHL playoff games.

He has spent the last few seasons bouncing between different Swedish teams in the SHL and HockeyAllsvenskan, their second-tier league. He was drafted 167th overall in the sixth round of the 2016 NHL Entry Draft by the Detroit Red Wings, in which he spent one season in the team’s organization, going 2-5-0 in seven games with the Grand Rapids Griffins (AHL) and 4-6-0 in 10 games with the Toledo Walleye (ECHL) in the 2019-20 season.

Larsson will likely provide some AHL goaltending depth, and could get called up depending on his play, as well as the goaltending situation next season.

In other news, the Penguins also announced that they re-signed their 2019 first-round draft pick, Sam Poulin, to a two-year contract extension with an AAV of $775K.

Poulin is coming off a great season, with 16 goals and 31 points in 41 games with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins (AHL), as well as skating in three games with the NHL Penguins this year. He has 36 goals and 72 points in 128 career AHL games and one assist in six career NHL games.

Poulin will be one of the young stars for the Penguins, contending for a roster spot come October. Dubas has mentioned that he wants to get this team younger, and these two moves are helping point the Penguins in that direction.
