Steelers’ New OC Arthur Smith Has The Truth Of His Time In Atlanta Revealed By Bijan Robinson
Dale Zanine-USA TODAY Sports

The Pittsburgh Steelers made headlines this offseason by hiring former Atlanta Falcons Head Coach Arthur Smith as their new offensive coordinator. During his tenure in Atlanta, Smith faced challenges, partly due to a less competitive roster. Notably, he received considerable criticism regarding his utilization of rookie star running back, Bijan Robinson.

Many observers questioned why Robinson wasn't featured more prominently, especially as the Falcons posted a 7-10 record in 2023 and Smith was subsequently dismissed after the season. With the Steelers set to open their 2024 season against Smith's former team in Atlanta, the matchup presents Smith with an early opportunity for redemption against the team that let him go.

Adding insight into his relationship with Smith, Robinson recently appeared on the Bussin' With The Boys podcast, hosted by Will Compton and Taylor Lewan. When asked about his experience playing under Smith, Robinson shared that Smith had communicated clearly about his role throughout the season. He spoke positively about his former head coach, indicating a respectful and effective player-coach relationship despite the external criticisms.

"For me, I played running back, but I played other positions, too. I played wide receiver, I played slot. You can line me up anywhere. I really appreciate Arthur Smith for doing that to me. With him doing that for me, now where I'm at, the game has slowed down so much. Instantly. Because I'm learning so many different things. From linebackers to coverages to everything.”

This perspective sheds light on Smith's thoughtful coaching approach, as relayed by Robinson, one of the players most impacted by his strategies. Robinson shared that Smith was cautious not to overuse him in his rookie season, aiming to avoid the intense workload that Derrick Henry shouldered in previous years. Smith's priority was to ensure Robinson's longevity, avoiding the risk of wear and tear in his debut season.

In 2023, Robinson's usage was diverse and strategic. He was not only positioned in the backfield but also utilized in the slot and as a receiver, demonstrating his versatility across the offense. Over the course of the season, Robinson had 214 carries for 976 rushing yards and four touchdowns on the ground. Additionally, he proved effective in the passing game, catching 58 passes for 487 receiving yards and adding four more touchdowns through the air. This multifaceted use of Robinson highlights Smith's adaptability and innovative offensive planning.

Much discussion has centered on Smith's usage of Robinson during his rookie season, and in hindsight, Smith's approach appears to have been solid. Given the Falcons' struggles, particularly at the quarterback position, and their overall team performance, Smith had to navigate significant challenges. Now, as he transitions to Pittsburgh, Smith inherits a revitalized quarterback room, a promising young offensive line, and a robust defense. This environment positions him well to restore his reputation and silence critics from his tenure as a head coach.

The enthusiasm around Smith's appointment by the Steelers is well-founded, especially considering his successful stint as the offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans. Under his guidance, the Titans' offense flourished, with Ryan Tannehill enjoying some of the best years of his career and Henry becoming a dominant running back in the league.

Smith's offensive philosophy, characterized by heavy use of play-action and a strong running game, seems perfectly suited to Pittsburgh's current roster. With the right personnel in place, there is a strong belief that Smith's system will thrive in Pittsburgh, offering a compelling narrative of redemption and strategic success.

Steelers' Najee Harris And Jaylen Warren Are Set For Huge Seasons In 2024

The players poised to benefit significantly from Smith's offensive strategy are the Steelers' running backs, Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren. Despite operating within one of the league's less effective offenses, both players had commendable performances in 2023.

With the introduction of an enhanced offensive system, an improved offensive line, and better quarterback play, Harris and Warren are exceptionally well-positioned for breakthrough seasons. The new system under Smith, known for its robust running game, should provide these talented backs with even more opportunities to excel, setting the stage for a massive 2024 from the duo.
