New Orleans Saints Could Pursue Huge QB Trade Following 2024 Season
Stephen Lew-USA TODAY Sports

The New Orleans Saints are entering an interesting 2024 NFL season with quite a few questions about the future. Arguably the biggest question for the team comes at the quarterback position. Will Derek Carr be able to have a better second season with the team or will he end up facing the team parting ways with him?

Carr was signed to a big-time free agency contract last offseason. While the Saints thought he would help lead them back to the playoffs, Carr did not impress. He didn’t play poorly, but he was far from impressive.

If Carr doesn’t impress this season, it seems possible that the New Orleans Saints would be open to moving on. One quarterback in particular has been linked as a potential target for New Orleans depending on how things go in 2024.

New Orleans Saints Could Pursue Huge QB Trade Following 2024 Season

ESPN’s Bill Barnwell wrote an article about Kirk Cousins’ potential future. If the Atlanta Falcons decide to move on after 2024 and give Michael Penix Jr. a chance to start, plenty of teams would have interest in trading for the veteran quarterback. He has the Saints on the list.

“The Giants, Jets, Saints, Seahawks and even the Dolphins could also be in the market for a veteran starter. If Cousins plays well in 2024 and both he and the Falcons want to split, there will be a market for him next year.”

Cousins will first have to prove that he can return to form following a brutal Achilles injury last season. He is 35 years old, which makes recovery from that kind of injury much tougher.

For the New Orleans Saints, a healthy version of Cousins would be an upgrade over Carr. Cousins has been a driving force for offenses throughout his entire career. The same cannot be said for Carr.

Granted, the Saints are very high on rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler. They believe that he could be their long-term quarterback. However, they may want to develop him for a few years before putting on the field, much like the Green Bay Packers did with Jordan Love.

All of that being said, it will be very interesting to monitor the Kirk Cousins situation in Atlanta. He wasn’t happy that the franchise drafted Penix and a divorce could happen relatively quickly.

If he becomes available next offseason and Carr doesn’t perform well, the New Orleans Saints would make perfect sense as a potential trade destination.
